# Generating and deleting S/MIME certificates

## Generating S/MIME certificates

Below we have compiled a short description and links for further information about how to generate an S/MIME certificate.

Detailed step-by-step instructions are available, where provided, via the links to the support pages of the respective Certificate Authorities (CA).

Please note that each step should be carried out on the device on which the S/MIME certificate will be used.

Tip
After verification has been completed and the certificate has been issued, it is available in AutoDNS or in SSL Manager at all times.

### DigiCert

After verification has been completed successfully, the certificate is sent as a p7b file and CRT file to the email address specified as the common name. [Further information](https://docs.digicert.com/en/certcentral/manage-certificates/client-certificates-guide/generate-your-client-certificate.html)

#### Sectigo

After verification has been completed successfully and the certificate has been issued, it is available in AutoDNS or SSL Manager. [Further information](https://sectigo.com/knowledge-base/detail/Customer-Guide-For-Ordering-and-Installing-Sectigo-Secure-Email-Certificates/kA03l000000o6dP)

#### GlobalSign

After verification has been completed successfully, the certificate can be generated and retrieved from the GlobalSign system using the pick-up password specified when ordering. The link for this is included in the certificate issuance email. As soon as the certificate has been generated, it is also available in AutoDNS or SSL Manager.

Please note that for bulk orders (reissue and renew), the password set during registration remains valid and no new passwords can be defined. A new password for both order types can however be assigned at any time in Single Mode. [Further information](https://support.globalsign.com/customer/portal/articles/1216453)

More information about the different requirements for certificate verification/authentication can be found [here](/en/tls-ssl-smime/smime-certificates-fundamentales/).

## Deleting S/MIME certificates

If you, despite the careful checks provided in SSL Manager, make a mistake with your order or no longer require a specific S/MIME certificate, you can delete it. For example, with the CA GlobalSign, this can be done up to 7 days after receiving the email for generating/downloading the certificate.
