EPP Status Codes
Domain status codes reference — client and server statuses
EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) status codes indicate the current state of a domain. They control what operations are permitted. Understanding these codes is essential for diagnosing transfer, renewal, and DNS issues.
Client Status Codes (Registrar-Applied)
- clientTransferProhibited
- Transfer lock. Applied post-registration (60 days), post-transfer (60 days), and post-COR (60 days, opt-out available). Registrar can remove.
- clientHold
- Domain suspended by registrar. DNS disabled. Website and email stop working. Common causes: unverified contact email, payment dispute, policy violation.
- clientDeleteProhibited
- Prevents accidental deletion. Registrar-applied lock. Must be removed before domain can be deleted.
- clientUpdateProhibited
- Prevents modifications to domain data (contacts, nameservers). Part of Registry Lock implementations.
- clientRenewProhibited
- Prevents renewal. Rare. May be applied in dispute situations.
Server Status Codes (Registry-Applied)
- serverTransferProhibited
- Registry-level transfer lock. Cannot be removed by registrar. Requires direct registry intervention. Applied during disputes, legal holds, or Registry Lock.
- serverHold
- Registry has suspended domain. DNS disabled at registry level. Applied for NIS2 non-compliance (.SE, .DE), policy violations, or legal orders.
- serverDeleteProhibited
- Registry prevents deletion. Applied during UDRP proceedings or legal disputes.
- serverUpdateProhibited
- Registry prevents all modifications. Part of Registry Lock service.
