Eligibility & Restrictions
Registrant must be a natural or legal person with commercial or legal registration in Bulgaria or another EU member state. Intra-community VAT number required. Non-EU entities: must register through a proxy/trustee who is an EU citizen or EU-registered company. Two registration classes: PROTECTED (registrant must hold a Bulgarian trademark for the domain name) and UNPROTECTED (no trademark required, but domain can be disputed). Individuals (EU citizens): must sign authorization before a Bulgarian Consul if outside Bulgaria, or use a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) issued by a Bulgarian provider.
Physical documentation required. Registration application must be signed (QES or paper). Companies outside Bulgaria must provide company registration extract + signed authorization (consular notarization if outside Bulgaria). Processing takes 2+ days.
PROTECTED vs UNPROTECTED: Unprotected domains can be disputed and transferred to a trademark holder at any time. Advise customers to register as Protected if they hold a Bulgarian trademark.
Registration
1 year only (max 10 years at some registrars). Registration requires signed application form (sent by email after order). Identification of registrant mandatory: QES for Bulgarian citizens, company documents for legal entities, consular authorization for non-Bulgarian EU citizens. Processing: 2+ days after document receipt. Domain blocked for 30 days while awaiting documents.
Transfer Procedure
Transfer requires signed transfer request form from the domain holder. Physical documentation submitted to registry. Transfer sets new expiry date (like new registration). Registrar change is free. Manual processing: several days.
Transfer resets expiry date. Unused registration period forfeited. Same as .NO.
📘 ICANN Transfer Policy (IRTP) — See ICANN Transfer Policy for the full IRTP framework, auth code rules, 60-day lock periods, and TEAC.
Registrant Change
Registrant change (trade) is a paid operation. Paper documentation must be submitted to the registry. Registrant change resets expiry date from the date of change (like new registration). Both current and new registrant must provide identification documents.
Registrant change resets expiry and requires physical documentation. This is the 'Umfirmierung' pattern that drives UD-5 tickets. Always warn customers that the domain effectively becomes a new registration.
📘 ICANN OwnerChange (COR) — See ICANN OwnerChange for COR triggers, FOA/DA modes, 60-day lock, and opt-out.
Renewal & Deletion
Standard renewal process.
📘 ICANN ERRP — See ICANN ERRP for the standard gTLD expiry lifecycle (Auto-Renew Grace → RGP → Pending Delete → Released).
Restore / Redemption Grace Period
45-day quarantine (protection period) after expiry. Only the original domain owner can renew during quarantine. Additional restore fee applies if past the standard renewal date (restore possible within 14 days past renewal date). After quarantine: domain released.
📘 ICANN ERRP — See ICANN ERRP for RGP details and standard restore fees.
WHOIS / Privacy
WHOIS privacy NOT available. For organisations: all registrant data disclosed (name, address, phone, email). For individuals: only name disclosed. IDN supported (Bulgarian Cyrillic). No WHOIS privacy service.
📘 ICANN Registration Data Policy — See Registration Data Policy for RDP 2025, RDAP, redaction defaults, and privacy/proxy rules.
NIS2 Compliance
Bulgaria NIS2 transposition applies. No .BG-specific implementation documented.
📘 NIS2 Compliance — See NIS2 Compliance for Article 28 requirements, registry implementation status, and operational impact.
Known Error Codes & Notes
- Physical docs mandatory: Registration, transfer, and registrant change all require signed physical documentation. QES or consular-notarized authorization.
- Expiry reset on transfer: Transfer and registrant change both reset expiry to 1 year from processing date. Unused period forfeited.
- Protected vs Unprotected: Unprotected domains can be disputed. Protected requires Bulgarian trademark.
- 30-day document window: Domain blocked for 30 days awaiting documents. If not received, registration cancelled.
- No WHOIS privacy: WHOIS privacy not available for .BG.
- Umfirmierung pattern: Registrant name/company changes require full paper documentation cycle. High-friction process. See HC article UD-5.
