Eligibility & Restrictions

Open to anyone worldwide. No residency requirement. No local presence required.

Registration

1 year. Auto-renews annually. To avoid unwanted renewal: disable auto-renew at least 3 days before expiry.
Registrant full name mandatory (minimum characters). Single-letter first names are not accepted by the registry.

Transfer Procedure

Auth code (token) sent to registrant email by NIC.AT. Valid 21 days. Transfer completes after auth code confirmed. After transfer: domain owner receives email confirmation from registry.
📘 ICANN Transfer Policy (IRTP) — See ICANN Transfer Policy for the full IRTP framework, auth code rules, 60-day lock periods, and TEAC.

Registrant Change

Change of Holder requires form submission. Electronic consent now accepted (checkbox/digital mechanism) as of 2024/2025. Wet-signed form no longer mandatory. If electronic consent method used: registrar must retain logs for 2 business days. For immediate deletions outside renewal cycle: AT Cancellation Form still required signed by registrant.
Domain Withdrawal available if registrar cannot reach registrant. This gives the domain back to registry; NIC.AT contacts registrant directly.
📘 ICANN OwnerChange (COR) — See ICANN OwnerChange for COR triggers, FOA/DA modes, 60-day lock, and opt-out.

Renewal & Deletion

Domains auto-renew. Deletion requires written or electronic registrant consent (verifiable). If registrant refuses or is unresponsive: Domain Withdrawal to registry.
📘 ICANN ERRP — See ICANN ERRP for the standard gTLD expiry lifecycle (Auto-Renew Grace → RGP → Pending Delete → Released).

Restore / Redemption Grace Period

Restore supported in real-time via RCP/API only for explicit deletions. Quarantine period applies (duration varies). Domain Withdrawal (Withdrawing) gives domain back to registry; registrar no longer manages it.
📘 ICANN ERRP — See ICANN ERRP for RGP details and standard restore fees.

WHOIS / Privacy

WHOIS privacy (disclosure) controlled per contact field. By default privacy protection disabled. Fields can be disclosed/hidden: X-AT-DISCLOSE, X-AT-DISCLOSE-VOICE, X-AT-DISCLOSE-FAX, X-AT-DISCLOSE-EMAIL.
Registry can initiate registrant verification; failure results in revocation (no restore/refund) and is not communicated to the registrar.
📘 ICANN Registration Data Policy — See Registration Data Policy for RDP 2025, RDAP, redaction defaults, and privacy/proxy rules.

NIS2 Compliance

No .AT-specific NIS2 implementation documented. Standard EU NIS2 obligations apply to registrars operating in Austria.
📘 NIS2 Compliance — See NIS2 Compliance for Article 28 requirements, registry implementation status, and operational impact.

Known Error Codes & Notes

  • No open confirmation-process: Auth code invalid or expired. Reset at current registrar.
  • Registry revocation: NIC.AT can revoke domain for inaccurate data without notice to registrar.
  • IDN: NOT supported for .AT. Second-level domains: .co.at, .or.at available.
