DENIC WHOIS: Why InterNetX Appears
Why .de WHOIS shows InterNetX as registrar for domains managed by other providers
If you look up a .de domain in WHOIS and see "InterNetX GmbH" as the registrar, but your domain is managed by a different provider (such as IONOS, STRATO, or United Domains), this article explains why.
Why InterNetX Appears
DENIC (the .de registry) requires all .de domains to be registered through a DENIC-accredited registrar. InterNetX is an accredited DENIC registrar. Several other providers in the IONOS Group use InterNetX as their technical registrar for .de domains. This means:
- Your provider
- You manage your domain through your provider's interface (e.g. IONOS control panel, STRATO customer area, United Domains portfolio).
- Technical registrar
- Behind the scenes, InterNetX is the DENIC-accredited registrar that holds the domain at the registry level.
- WHOIS display
- DENIC WHOIS shows the accredited registrar (InterNetX), not the end-customer-facing provider.
ℹ This is a standard industry practice. Many hosting and domain providers use a technical registrar for registry-level operations. It does not affect your ownership, control, or management of the domain.
What This Means For You
- Domain ownership
- You (or your organisation) remain the legal owner of the domain. The registrant data in WHOIS reflects your details, not InterNetX's.
- Domain management
- Continue managing your domain through your provider's interface. DNS, email, nameservers, contacts are all managed there.
- Support
- Contact your provider for domain management questions. InterNetX handles the registry-level operations transparently.
- Transfers
- If you want to transfer your domain to a different registrar outside the group, contact your provider to initiate the transfer. They will coordinate with InterNetX at the registry level.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is my domain safe?
- Yes. The registrar field in WHOIS identifies the technical registrar, not the owner. Your domain ownership and control are not affected.
- Can InterNetX modify my domain?
- InterNetX processes registry-level operations on instruction from your provider. They do not make changes independently.
- Why did I receive an email from InterNetX?
- Certain registry-level communications (verification emails, renewal notices) may come from InterNetX as the registrar of record. These are legitimate. If unsure, contact your provider to confirm.
- I want to contact the WHOIS registrar directly
- If you are an AutoDNS reseller customer, contact InterNetX support directly. If you manage your domain through another provider (IONOS, STRATO, UD), contact that provider first.
