Domain Registration: Timelines

How long registration takes by TLD type, what happens after payment, and troubleshooting

Domain registration processing time varies by TLD. Most gTLDs register in real-time. Many ccTLDs require manual processing and may take days or weeks. This article explains what to expect.

Registration Timeline by TLD Type

gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, new gTLDs)
Real-time. Domain active within seconds of registration. DNS propagation: minutes to hours depending on TTL.
EU ccTLDs (.de, .at, .nl, .fr, .uk, .se, .fi, .eu, .ch)
Real-time to 1 day. Most European registries process instantly via EPP. Some (.DK, .NO) may take up to 2 days.
Manual ccTLDs (.hr, .bg, .ba, .sa)
Days to weeks. Physical documentation required. .HR: 2-3 working days. .BG: up to 45 days. .BA: 2-4 weeks. .SA: ~2 working days (review).
Restricted ccTLDs (.qa, .ir, .bt)
Variable. Subject to registry review and eligibility verification. May require local presence documentation.

What Happens After You Submit a Registration

1. Order submitted
AutoDNS sends the registration request to the registry. For gTLDs: instant. For ccTLDs: queued for processing.
2. Registry processing
Registry validates eligibility, nameservers, and contact data. If extensions are required (e.g. .DE trustee, .IT entity type), they are verified.
3. Domain active
Domain appears in your AutoDNS portfolio. DNS begins propagating. WHOIS updated.
4. Verification email
Registrant email verification sent (ICANN requirement for gTLDs; NIS2 requirement for EU ccTLDs). Must be completed within 14 days.

Troubleshooting: Where Is My Domain?

Status: Pending
Registration is being processed by the registry. For gTLDs this should resolve in seconds. For ccTLDs, allow the stated processing time. If gTLD is stuck in Pending: check for missing extension parameters or contact data errors.
Status: Failed
Registration rejected by registry. Common reasons: eligibility not met, nameserver validation failed, required extensions missing, domain name reserved or restricted. Check the error message in AutoDNS.
Domain active but not resolving
DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours (typically much faster). Verify nameservers are correctly configured. Use dig domain.tld or online DNS checker.
Confirmation email not received
Check spam/junk folder. Verify registrant email is correct in the contact handle. Re-send via AutoDNS contacts panel.
