Registrant Verification Process

Email verification lifecycle, re-triggering, suspension, and TLD-specific rules

After registering a domain, transferring it, or changing the registrant contact, a verification email is sent to the registrant's email address. If not completed within the deadline, the domain may be suspended. This article covers the full lifecycle.

Verification Lifecycle

1. Trigger
Verification email sent automatically after: new domain registration, incoming transfer, registrant email address change, or registrant contact change.
2. Email sent
Sent to the registrant email address in the ownerC handle. Contains a confirmation link. Check spam/junk if not received.
3. Deadline
14 days to click the confirmation link. Clock starts from the moment the verification email is sent.
4. If verified
Domain continues operating normally. Verification status shows as confirmed in AutoDNS.
5. If NOT verified
Domain suspended. DNS disabled. Website and email stop working. See consequences by TLD below.

Consequences by TLD

gTLDs
clientHold applied. Domain stops resolving immediately. Removed when verification is completed.
.DE (DENIC)
DENIC Phase II (from April 14, 2026): automated risk assessment → verification request → 7-day window → 90-day quarantine (DNS off) → deletion after 91 days.
ccTLDs without clientHold
.FR, .NL, .UK, .AT, .CH, .BE, .IT, .ES, .PL, .DK, .PT: nameservers redirected to suspension landing page. Original NS restored automatically on verification.

How to Re-Trigger Verification

AutoDNS UI
Contacts → find the ownerC handle → click Re-send Verification.
Before re-sending
Verify the email address in the handle is correct and accessible. If the email is wrong, update it first (this triggers a new verification automatically).
Already suspended?
Complete verification. The suspension is lifted automatically once the link is clicked. For .HR: do NOT re-trigger without contacting support; CARNET requires manual intervention.

TLD-Specific Verification Rules

.DE (NIS2)
Phone number verification may be required in addition to email. DENIC validates against commercial register for organisations. WHOIS data for legal entities published from January 28, 2026.
.SE
IIS may require additional verification for organisations. Swedish ID number may be needed.
.BE
DNS Belgium reviews WHOIS accuracy. If questionable data found: 14-day correction window. If not corrected: domain revoked. 40 days to reactivate after revocation.
.IT
"Bad WHOIS" procedure. Registry may flag inaccurate data and require correction.
.IN
Mandatory eKYC verification. Indian nexus required for .in domains.
.DK
NIS2 enforcement from January 2026. DK Hostmaster validates registrant data.
.HR
CARNET KYC verification after registration. Verification failure → domain suspended. Manual CARNET intervention required to restore.
⚠ A domain suspension due to failed verification can be resolved by completing verification. But while suspended, the website and email are offline. Act within the deadline to avoid business disruption.
